1 Corinthians 1:18 “For the preaching of the cross is to
them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of
God.”
Gib Singleton’s title of this fresh interpretation of the
crucifixion is “Agnus Dei”, or Lamb of God. Sacrifice was an essential part of Judaism
and the Temple. The Bible is very specific about sacrifices made at the altar
to atone for sins. The offering of the lamb is one of the Old Testament
sacrifices. There are other types of offerings with various other animals, but
the lamb is a unique one. The lamb is unusual because it does not resist the
sacrifice. This animal is so trusting and offers no resistance, unlike other
animals. The lamb looks lovingly into the eyes of this master as its life is
taken, as if it understands that this is just something that has to be done.
The text of the Mass proclaims: “Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the
world, have mercy upon us! Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have
mercy upon us! Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, grant us
peace!” The artist thrusts the crucified body towards the viewer with the head
jutting out and the knees angling outward. Singleton has given us a fresh
glimpse in to Christ as He leans His face into your to say” I’m doing this for
you. It’s ok. I love you.” John the Baptist himself said in the Book of John
1:29: “Behold the Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world!”
